Why cards arrive inactive
Cards are often sold switched off so the money stays safe if one goes missing on its way to the buyer. Activation tells the issuer that the card is with its rightful owner and may now be spent in shops and online.
Turning it on
- Look it overMake sure the card is undamaged and the packaging was sealed.
- Open activationUse the activate button at the top of the page.
- Provide the detailsNumber, expiry date and security code.
- Wait for confirmationThen run a balance check to be sure.
Tips for first use
- Sign the back if the card has a signature panel.
- Keep the packaging or receipt until the card has worked once.
- After two failed attempts, call the number on the back, since repeated tries can lock the card.
Giving or receiving
A giver should keep the receipt until the recipient confirms the card works. A receiver should activate the card soon after the occasion, so any problem is simpler to fix while the purchase is recent.
