Make every dollar on your gift card count

Small habits that keep leftover amounts from being forgotten.

Write it down

Forgetting is the main reason money goes unused. After each purchase, record the leftover amount in your phone or photograph the card with its receipt.

Know the terms

Look for an expiry date and any fee for leaving a card idle. If the date is close, put a reminder in your calendar so you can spend the funds in time.

Time it with sales

Seasonal sales and end-of-season clearances let the same balance buy more. Just do not wait so long that the card expires.

Finish small leftovers

Pay part of a purchase with the card and the rest another way, or add the remainder to a store account if the retailer permits it.

Pass it on

If you will not use a balance, give it to a friend or ask whether a local charity accepts it.

Hold on after returns

Refunds for gift card purchases often return to the same card, so keep it until you are sure nothing will go back. To see your current figure, open the balance check page.
